Translation of worskhop submission form and other organize site translation screen

Reported by: https://id.mayfirst.org/jamie Owned by: https://id.mayfirst.org/josue
Priority: critical Milestone: 5

Project Area: Workshops, Groups and Online Organizing Project: organize
Skill Set Required: Editorial/Copy Editing

Description

The organize.ussf2010.org is configured with the Drupal translation interface:

 http://organize.ussf2010.org/admin/build/translate/search

This contains the strings in the workshop proposal that need to be translated.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it's possible to only find the workshop proposal strings so they can be prioritized or not :(.

Josue - Can I assign this to you? although I realize you may assign it to someone else on the translation team.

thanks,
jamie

Thanks Josue!!

ok, i go to  http://organize.ussf2010.org/admin/build/translate/export and export the only thing available, which is identified as Spanish.

the problem is that Poedit, the editor i am using in linux, thinks this file is corrupted.

two errors:

Broken catalog file: singular form msgstr used together with msgid_plural
Couldn't load es.po, it is probably corrupted

any thoughts on how to deal with this? or other options for editing this text? the search mechanism is painful, so exporting this is the best way for me to efficiently get the translation into drupal.

Hey Primo,

1 -- is that translation stuff anyplace where you can get to it via ssh? Because you can download it from there as txt and work on the changes that way (maybe?) and then do the revision thing based on those changes?

2 -- What do other text editors think of the file? Do straight up txt editors also return a possible corruption error message?

Any of that helps?

no, the problem is with the translation infrastructure.

 http://drupal.org/node/212749#comment-1645476 is from the main initial developer of the whole drupal translation thing.

don't know what to do with it though...

Gah. I wish I knew more about how translation worked.

It does seem as the es.po file is a text file - and in answer to alfredo's question, it can be opened in a text file.

Editing the text file seems easier than navigating the search interface, but not as easy as using the poedit program.

Does that seem do-able Josue?

i don't know chico. i would rather fix the main problem, if possible.

there is a way to reset the system so that it is handling it properly. people mention importing a po file that is properly formatted, which will then reset the infrastructure. not sure what they mean though. :(

here is what jose reyero says in the link above:

If you import any po file without a proper Plural-Forms header it will delete the plural form in the language table.
Though it will be fixed again if you import a file with the proper value, this introduces some randomnesss:
The plural formula in your site will be that of the last po you imported (or none).

This is an issue too when you start translating from scratch on your site / l10n server.
All produced po files will miss that plural formula.

but maybe i will try an experiment with the current es.po file. i will add some translation strings to that file and try to import it. if it works i will report that here and work with that. if not, then we will have to do something else.

Changed 2 years ago by https://id.mayfirst.org/josue

ok, tried the experiment. ugh! first a typo made it fail. when i fixed it i then got this error:

    * The translation file es.po contains an error: "msgstr" was expected but not found on line 16482.
    * The translation import of es.po failed.

those lines show this discrepency:

#:  notifications_ui/notifications_ui.module:643
msgid "Display in block"
msgstr "Mostrar en bloque"

#:  notifications_ui/notifications_ui.module:320
msgid "A subscription has been created"
msgid_plural "@count subscriptions have been created"

not sure how one module could do it the wrong way and the right way at once. ugh! double ugh!

ok, not sure what to do next...

ok, still researching this.  http://drupal.org/node/253903#comment-1984048 says

We just updated from 6.x-1.x-dev to 6.x-1.3.tar for our site http://spanishtranslation.org/
and the plurals are working just fine. Thanks for the fix. Much appreciated.

 http://drupal.org/node/598228 is where the latest version of the drupal spanish lives. do we know what was imported in to the organize site? it further confuses me because this file is supposed to be placed into the core infrastructure, so since i do not believe we did that, i do not understand what was done to get spanish into the infrastructure. understanding that would go a long way to upgrading.

slowly moving forward...

ok, list of what is missing, what i can't access, what is giving me errors!!!

not in the po file:

Create Workshop Proposal
Please see the Call for proposals.
Proposed Session Title

that's it! everything else in the for is done except the choices, which we know have a problem. but when you look at the form, it is a big problem. i will try to investigate that later, but i do not have much time today.

 http://organize.ussf2010.org/es/workshops

Submit a Workshop Proposal
See Call for Proposals

when i try to translate the above text and links i cannot properly format it so that the system accepts it.

spanish should be:

<a href="/es/node/add/workshop">Sometir una Propuesta de Taller</a><br/><br/>
<a href="http://www.ussf2010.org/node/78">Convocatoria para Propuestas</a>

please text or call me if you need me.

Nice work Josue!!

I think those missing strings on workshops page are missing because we added those links to the header of the views - not really translation friendly (I'll take responsibility for that move).

I also agree - the untranslated cck option fields are a bit of a problem. If you are not an english speaker, you will be at a loss as to how to make the selection. I think those are the most crucial things to translate (although going live with it won't be a disaster).

Another problem I noticed is that it seems as though the javascript includes get messed up when using the spanish. I noticed in spanish, the path settings, author settings, etc. at the bottom of the submission form are no longer expandable. The javascript we coded ourselves works, but not the core javascript.

ok, figured out the "allowed values" stuff. they do not get properly wrapped in t(). apparently the latest dev version of cck does it properly, but there are some reports of problems even with that version.

so, workaround is to follow  http://drupal.org/node/182884#comment-753775, which is to use the PHP Code box instead of the Allowed Values List box with a variation of the following:

global $locale;
if($locale=="en")
{return array(
'big' => t('Big'),
'small' => t('Small')
);}
else
{return array(
'big' => t('Grand'),
'small' => t('Petit')
);}

works well. got a couple done. won't get to the rest until after my meeting ends @ 2pm PST.

Nice sleuthing!

As we discussed in IRC.... I just tested a simpler method:

return array(
'big' => t('Big'),
'small' => t('Small')
);

I changed the consulta tracks to use this method and after loading the page, the strings showed up in the translation interface.

This seems simpler since we can just use the existing translation interface.
