Calling All Techies!: How to Organize a Technology Team
Technology development is not just one aspect or one part of organizing for social change, but is integrated into almost every aspect of the movement-building process. Technology organizing, therefore, has just as much to do with building political consciousness and raising awareness as it does with creatively implementing technical solutions and strategy to support a campaign.
ICT working group members lead the US Social Forum in the development of its technology policies, organized the progressive technology movement's participation in and support of the social forum movement, generated and upheld the USSF technology principles, facilitated internal and external communication, and raised consciousness about the political importance of technology to the social forum movement.
This group of techies provided high level coordination, prioritizing, and decision making about the information and communications technology used in organizing the United States Social Forum in 2010. The group was inclusive of all levels of participation, skills, and opinions about the role of technology for social change.
Participants in this workshop will learn how to build a collaborative team dedicated to collaboration. Workshop organizers will guide participants in an interactive activity to build activism and capacity around technology needs. Discussion and Q&A will also offer tips and cautions when organizing a techie team.
