What is live audio streaming?

Live audio streaming means transmitting, as it is happening, audio from the US Social Forum over the Internet so people who are unable to attend the forum can listen to what is happening here.

Yes! Everyone participating in the USSF is encouraged to create a live stream.

How do I stream?

Below are directions for Linux, Windows, and Macintosh users.


If you are running linux or unix, we recommend using the darkice program.

On Debian based systems (including Ubuntu) you can use the package manager to install the darkice package. From the command line, it would be:

sudo aptitude install darkice

Next, download the sample darkice.cfg file available at the bottom of this page.

Read and edit the file as needed (directions are comments at the top of the file).

Then, plug in a mic to your computer and type:

darkice -c path/to/darkice.cfg

For Windows

Your laptop will either be loaded with software (edcast—open source media player/lame_dnc.dll for mps encoding) or you will check out a laptop with it already loaded. We will help you configure the software to accept the audio device—in this case, the Alesis mixer and microphones. The source server you will be streaming to is named: (Port Default: 8000, User: source, Password: streamussf).

To start streaming audio:

Step 1: Make sure both the computer and the mixer are turned off. Connect the XLR microphones (to MIC 1 and MIC 2), USB cable from the mixer to the computer and the power cords.

Step 2: Make sure the level knobs are turned all the way down, the gain, EQ and PAN knobs are all turned to the middle, and the HPF, and GTR button are up. Turn the phantom power on. Then turn on the computer and then the mixer last.

Step 3: Open edcast. Under “Live recording” make sure “USB Audio Codec” is selected. Then click on the connect button.

Step 4: Its best if you can plug in head phones to monitor the levels from the mixer—if not you can make sure that the mixer main level lights do not go above the yellow lights. Then slowly turn up the level and test the noise by having someone talk into the mics making sure the level monitor does not go to high. If the level is too high the stream will be distorted and difficult to listen to.

Ways to get good audio to stream:

#Microphones are omni-directional condenser mics. They are best for a panel with minimal discussion although the second mic could be used to people for questions. #Make sure speakers do not speak to close to the microphone or too far away—the ideal distance is around a foot to two feet. #Condenser mics are fragile so try not to drop one--damage could produce distortion.
